Education Summit
Kano state government has threatened sanctions against public primary and secondary school students who have the habit of lateness.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Haruna Doguwa gave the warning at Kano Education Summit 2024, held at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano on Tuesday.
According to Doguwa, any serious students would be in school before 8:00am as it is the hour where lessons are started, adding that the government would set up a taskforce to ensure compliance.
He said the state government would no longer condone students going to schools beyond 8:00am.
“I traveled to Yobe state, I observed something there that by 7:30am, you will not see any student on the road going to school. Why can’t we do the same here?
“We will take drastic action against lateness and truancy in school. We have provided means to go to school on time.
“We have repaired 70 shuttle buses to take students to schools and return them. So, we will take action against students going to school late,.
“We will mobilize a taskforce to ensure compliance,” he threatened.
Doguwa, who represented the state governor at the occasion, said the state government, in conjunction with Adolescent Health and Information Projects, AHIP a Non Governmental Organization are putting machinery in motion in strengthening girl child education in the state.
The commissioner informed the gathering that the European Union, EU and other international donors and development partners had promised to provide infrastructure in government schools.
He said the feat is as a result of the commitment and transparency of the administration of governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in making sure of the judicious use of the supports given by the development partners.
In her remarks earlier, the Director of AHIP Hajiya Mairo Bello identified education as the first foundation of life.
According to her, AHIP is determined to promote Girl Child Education not only in Kano state but the entire Northern Nigeria.
She said, other thematic areas of AHIP includes youth development programs, women empowerment initiatives, health promotions, life skills training, community mobilization and networking, as well as gender and social inclusions among others initiatives.
“Our Adolescent girls must retain and complete their education for Nigeria’s brighter future and economic prosperity.”
She noted that, promotion of education is moral responsibility of all, adding that her NGO is ready to partner with Kano state government and other partners to advance the course of girl child education.
