Child Protection
AHIP has been working with other CSOs to adapt the Child Right Act, now named the Child Protection Law in Kano state, since 2010 until it was passed by the Kano State House of Assemble and signed by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in May 2023.
Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP)
AHIP has worked with the Coalition for Policy Advocacy in Kano, comprising over 40 CSOs, to adapt VAPP Act in Kano state since 2016. IPAS, UNICEF, ROLAC, and the Ministry of Justice have supported the adaptation. The VAPP Act has been reviewed and validated. The Ministry of Justice, in consultation with all the partners, subsequently decided that the Draft VAPP Bill was infused into the Kano state Penal Code. Hence the 1960 Penal Code had to be reviewed, and the VAPP Bill was infused into the reviewed Penal Code. The Draft Law has been infused and validated and is ready to be sent to the executive Council for approval.
Girl’s Child Education
AHIP is part of the Girls Education partnership who have been working on developing a girl’s education policy supported by PERL and PLANE. The policy aim to achieve increased access, enrolment, retention, transition and completion rates for girls at all levels of education. Create an enabling environment and institutional structure for a world-class girls’ education system. Provide enabling learning environment that ensures quality learning outcomes for girls at all levels in Kano State. Strengthen the capacity of education managers to document accurately and in a timely manner, all relevant data for use in the Education Management Information System (EMIS) of the State. And Strengthen the capacity of key stakeholders in education for meaningful participation in addressing the challenges of girls’ education in the State. The draft policy is currently being finalize.
Teacher Policy
AHIP is part of the Girls Education partnership, which has been working on developing the Kano State Teacher Policy supported by PERL and PLANE. The policy aims to create a well-trained, skilled teaching workforce that can deliver quality education for global competitiveness; attract the best brains to the teaching profession through support for teacher preparation and training; Maintain a sustainable and robust education management system for transparent and accountable decision making at all levels; ensure an efficient system of recruitment and deployment of teachers that promotes equal opportunities to quality education for all; recruit an adequate number of teachers in line with a realistic target for the pupil to qualified teacher ratio and in accordance with laid out recruitment and deployment mechanisms; give top priority to the recruitment of female teachers and increasing the ratio of female teachers; institutionalize recruitment of qualified temporary or voluntary teachers where needed as a temporary measure while permanent teachers are being recruited; ensure an institutional and comprehensive continuing professional development programme of all serving teachers to update their knowledge and skills; enhance teacher motivation, performance and esteem through the provision of adequate incentives.
